From the call to the first lesson

How in-home tutoring works

A tutor comes to your home at a time you agree. This is what happens between your first call and the first lesson.

  1. Talk to Jake

Book a free 15-minute Tutor Match Call. Jake asks what your child needs help with, how they learn and which times suit your family.

  2. See your tutor’s profile

Within 48 hours we text and email you the tutor’s profile and a time for the first lesson. Reply to confirm it, or ask for a different time.

  3. The first lesson at home

The tutor finds where your child is up to and starts on the topic causing trouble. You get a written note straight after, and if it isn’t the right fit, you don’t pay for the lesson.

If your child has had a tutor before, the new tutor starts from where they’re up to, so your child doesn’t start again from the beginning.

Subjects and stages

Tutoring by subject and year level

One-on-one tutoring covers every school subject from Prep to Year 12, and Programs cover Years 7 to 12. This is what lessons look like at each stage.

Prep to Year 12

Maths tutoring in Brisbane

Your child’s maths tutor in Brisbane starts from the topic your child has at school that week. When a question shows a gap from an earlier year, the tutor fixes that first and then goes back to the class work.

For Years 7 to 10 there is also a weekly Maths class online for each year level, with 7 students or fewer. In Years 11 and 12, one-on-one lessons cover Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics and General Mathematics, including the internal assessments and the external exam. Read more about our maths tutoring.

Prep to Year 12

English tutoring in Brisbane

One-on-one English lessons work on reading, writing and the essays and speeches your child is assessed on at school. There is also a weekly online English class for Years 7 and 8.

The details are on our page for English tutoring in Brisbane.

Prep to Year 6

Primary school tutoring

Primary school tutoring in Brisbane is one-on-one, in your home or online. From Prep to Year 2, lessons work on phonics, first readers and early number sense. In Years 3 and 4 the focus moves to reading comprehension, times tables, fractions and writing longer pieces.

Years 5 and 6 work on problem-solving and getting ready for high school. NAPLAN runs in March of Years 3 and 5, and the tutor can prepare your child for the reading, writing and numeracy tests in the weeks before.

Years 7 to 12

High school and QCE tutoring

Our high school tutors in Brisbane teach Years 7 to 12, one-on-one or in a Program class. In Years 11 and 12, a QCE tutor in Brisbane works on the internal assessments and the external exam. In Units 3 and 4 of a General subject, your child’s result comes from three internal assessments and one external exam. The internal assessments make up 75% of the result in most subjects, and 50% in Maths and Science subjects.

“It depends on what the assessment is, but the first thing I look at is the task sheet. It tells you what you need to do, how it’s supposed to be written, what information to include and all the context.”

“Where students lose marks most often is in reasoning and justifying their answers.”

“When a student needs help with a draft, I give them a mirrored situation, with a different context but the same or similar skills, or I ask them questions. If they don’t understand the content itself, I teach them the underlying skills first and then connect it back to the task.”

“A lot of parents don’t know that the external exam covers the same things as the internal assessments. It’s set externally, so even the teachers don’t know exactly what will be on it.”

Leah Hider, registered Queensland teacher and KeirEd co-founder

Before Year 11, you can estimate an ATAR or compare senior subjects and their prerequisites.

My daughter is in year 7, and was struggling with math. Leah was amazing, and helped us find Issabelle to Tutor. Issabelle was better than we could have ever hoped. Very patient, explained everything so well and and created a great environment for learning. The best part is my daughter loved her and looked forward to the sessions. After only a short few months, my daughter is feeling confident again. Thanks so much guys!

  • Elaine TingSeptember 2025
    ★★★★★

We are really happy with the prompt communication provided by KeirEd Tutoring. The tutor, Isobel, always checks on what Eddison is learning at school, and delivers the lesson with reference to the requirements of school assessments. We truly appreciate Isobel’s effort in ensuring Eddison is engaged during the lesson, taking into consideration his short attention span and level of understanding. Highly recommended!

  • Yvonne PrinceSeptember 2025
    ★★★★★

Jake and Leah are exceptional and highly recommended. My daughter has improved an entire grade in a short space of time for maths methods. Great communication and flexibility..

  • Zoe SmithSeptember 2025
    ★★★★★

We’ve had such a wonderful experience with KeirEd tutoring. We’ve seen such a boost not only in our daughters academic skills but most importantly in her confidence. We have had Jake and he is patient, knowledgeable, and able to explain concepts in a way that really clicks for her. He takes the time to understand her learning style and tailor each session to her needs. What I especially appreciate is how encouraging he is—she actually looks forward to tutoring now, which says a lot! Another feature I love is that after each tutoring session, they provide detailed notes. These notes are super helpful because they give me a clear picture of what was covered, how she’s progressing, and what areas need continued focus. It makes me feel included in her learning journey. Since starting, her grades have improved, but more importantly, she feels capable, motivated and confident. Jake is also very professional and easy to work with—scheduling is flexible, communication is clear, and he truly cares about her progress. I highly recommend KeirEd to any parent looking for supportive, effective, and caring tutors. It has made a real difference for my daughter, and I’m so grateful we found them.

  • Harper SmithNovember 2025
    ★★★★★

As someone who has been in tutoring since primary school, KeirEd Tutoring has been by far the best experience I’ve ever had! The tutors are genuinely some of the kindest and most supportive people I’ve ever met. They make each class not only helpful but also interactive and fun, so learning never feels stressful or boring. They really take the time to listen to what I need as a student and help me grow in my academic journey. I went from almost failing some of my classes to not only passing but actually feeling confident in my work. Their patience, clear explanations, and genuine care have made such a huge difference. They believe in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. KeirEd Tutoring is truly the best of the best and i will always recommend KeirEd Tutoring to anyone who needs support in their learning.

What checks do your tutors complete?

Every tutor has an interview with an ID check and a review of their experience and references. Tutors who teach in Brisbane homes hold a Queensland Blue Card before their first lesson.
