QLD Year 10 Subject Selection Guide
Choose Year 11 subjects without ATAR panic.
For many Queensland families, subject selection lands in Term 3, usually around August or September. Use this framework to protect prerequisites, match subjects to strengths, and keep the workload realistic before the form is due.

The goal is not the “perfect” subject list. It is a flexible, defensible first choice.
Most parents are not worried because they love admin. They are worried because the choice feels like a trap: pick the wrong subjects now, and your child loses the course they want later.
That fear is understandable, but it needs a clearer frame. Year 10 subject selection should not be treated as a one-shot prediction of your child’s future. It is a planning decision made with the information you have now, then reviewed once Year 11 actually begins.
The three-question framework
Use these questions in order
If you start with scaling rumours, the conversation gets noisy fast. Start with pathways, then evidence, then workload.
What might your child want to study after school?
List two or three broad pathways: health, engineering, law, teaching, business, design, trades, defence, TAFE, or “not sure yet”. Then check prerequisites for those pathways before choosing electives.
What are they actually good at?
Look at recent results, teacher comments and effort patterns. The best subject is not always the one that sounds impressive. It is the one where your child can learn deeply and keep producing strong work.
What is the workload tradeoff?
Methods, Specialist, Chemistry and Physics can be excellent choices, but not when they crowd out sleep, sport, work, family life and the subject your child could have topped.
Scaling without panic
Do not choose a subject only because it “scales well”
QTAC’s own Year 10 subject selection advice says it is best not to choose subjects based on predicted scaling outcomes. That matters, because scaling is not a bonus applied to a subject name. It is a statistical process that changes with the cohort each year.
The QTAC 2025 ATAR Report shows why this can confuse families. In 2025, the median raw result for Mathematical Methods was 76 and the median scaled result was 89.64. For General Mathematics, the median raw result was 69 and the median scaled result was 59.54. For Business, the median raw result was 70 and the median scaled result was 62.70.
Those numbers do not mean every child should choose Mathematical Methods. They mean stronger cohorts and subject difficulty affect scaling. A student who is genuinely suited to Business may still be better off earning a high result there than struggling through a subject chosen for reputation.

This table is a planning shortcut, not a substitute for checking the exact course page. Universities update entry requirements, course structures and thresholds, so use the links before finalising a Year 10 subject form.

Course examples use UQ pages available on 19 May 2026 because they publish clear Queensland Year 12 prerequisite wording. Families should still check QTAC and the exact university course page for the year their child will apply.
The fear underneath the form
“What if we pick wrong and ruin their ATAR?”
This is the fear parents usually do not say out loud. The answer is: one imperfect Year 10 subject form does not automatically ruin Year 12.
QTAC calculates the ATAR from eligible Units 3 and 4 results, not from the first subject preference form your child filled in during Year 10. English completion matters for ATAR eligibility, and QTAC uses the best five eligible scaled results under its rules.
That does not mean subject selection is unimportant. It means the most dangerous choice is not “Business instead of Chemistry” or “General Maths instead of Methods” in isolation. The dangerous choice is ignoring prerequisites, ignoring evidence of ability, or leaving a struggling subject untouched for too long.
Changing subjects in Year 11
You can usually change subjects, but timing matters
Queensland schools can consider subject changes after a course has begun. QCAA says schools, students and parents should consider how the new subject’s teaching, learning and assessment requirements will be completed within required timelines.
That is the practical catch. Changing early in Year 11 is usually much easier than changing once Units 3 and 4 have begun, because Units 3 and 4 are the summative pair used for final subject results. If your child is clearly mismatched with a subject, do not wait until the damage is obvious in Year 12.
The parent move is simple: review the subject mix after the first few assessment pieces, then speak to the school before timelines become tight.

A simple parent checklist before you submit the form
- Write down three possible post-school pathways, even if one is “not sure yet”.
- Check prerequisites for those pathways on QTAC and the university course pages.
- Circle the subjects your child consistently does well in without extreme stress.
- Mark any “stretch” subjects that need tutoring, teacher support or a backup plan.
- Ask your child which subject they would choose if ATAR rumours were removed from the room.
- Book a Year 11 review date before the end of Term 1 next year.

When do Queensland Year 10 students choose senior subjects?
Many Queensland schools run subject selection and SET Plan discussions in Term 3 of Year 10, often around August or September. Each school sets its own dates, so use your school’s deadline as the source of truth.
Should my child choose Mathematical Methods for ATAR scaling?
Only if it fits their pathway and ability. Mathematical Methods can scale strongly in some years, but QTAC advises students not to choose subjects just because of predicted scaling. If Methods is a prerequisite, choose it and support it early. If it is not required and your child is unlikely to perform well, compare the tradeoff carefully.
Can my child change subjects in Year 11?
Often, yes, but the school needs to make sure the learning and assessment requirements can still be completed. Changes are generally simpler earlier in Year 11 than after Units 3 and 4 begin.
What subjects are safest if my child does not know what they want to study?
Start with an eligible English pathway, a mathematics subject that matches their ability, and subjects they can perform well in. If STEM, health or engineering are possible, check whether Mathematical Methods, Chemistry or Physics are needed before ruling them out.
